🚨 BREAKING: Defence HQ Slams ‘False, Malicious’ Claims Linking Independence Day Cancellation to Alleged Coup Plot

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false and malicious media reports linking the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations to an alleged coup attempt by some military officers.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, described the reports as “baseless, mischievous, and aimed at creating unnecessary tension within the polity.”

He clarified that the arrests of some officers were part of routine disciplinary and administrative procedures, not connected to any plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains a disciplined and professional institution, fully committed to upholding democratic governance and the Constitution,” the statement said.

Gusau urged the public to disregard unfounded coup rumours, warning that those spreading fake news intended to destabilize the nation would face appropriate legal consequences.

He further noted that the decision to scale down or adjust Independence Day activities was taken for logistical and security considerations, and not due to any alleged threat to national stability.

The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its loyalty to the Commander-in-Chief and pledged continued dedication to national peace, unity, and the protection of Nigeria’s democracy.
