Senator Athan Achonu has declared support for the legalisation of cannabis in Nigeria, highlighting its potential to drive medical innovation and stimulate economic growth.
Speaking on the issue, Achonu said regulated cannabis use could open new opportunities in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture, while also boosting government revenue and generating employment.
He pointed out that many countries have already embraced cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes, urging Nigeria to leverage the multi-billion-dollar global industry rather than lag behind.
The lawmaker, however, stressed the need for a strict regulatory framework to curb abuse and safeguard public health.
Achonu’s position is expected to reignite debate in the National Assembly and among stakeholders, as cannabis remains prohibited under existing Nigerian law.
