Tinubu Orders Swift Action to Reduce Soaring Food Prices

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to immediately implement measures aimed at lowering food prices across Nigeria. The move comes as rising costs of staple goods continue to put pressure on households and fuel public concern about food security.

The directive was disclosed by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, who said the committee has been tasked with tackling key drivers of high food prices, including transportation costs, insecurity, and supply chain disruptions. According to him, the committee’s focus will be to make the movement of farm produce safer, cheaper, and more efficient across the country.

The Tinubu administration also announced the rollout of new agricultural programmes to boost production and empower farmers. Among them is the Farmer Soil Health Scheme, which will provide farmers with resources to improve soil fertility and increase yields, and a cooperative reform initiative designed to strengthen grassroots farming groups and improve access to credit.

President Tinubu emphasized that the reforms are part of his government’s broader vision for food sovereignty, where Nigeria produces enough affordable, available, and nutritious food for its citizens.

“Our goal is to ensure no Nigerian goes to bed hungry. Food security is national security,” Abdullahi quoted the President as saying.

The government has faced growing pressure from citizens over escalating food inflation, which has been worsened by insecurity in farming regions, rising fuel and transport costs, and post-subsidy economic adjustments. Analysts say the success of the new measures will depend on swift implementation, transparency, and collaboration between the federal government, state governments, and private sector players.
