The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has rolled out a comprehensive reform agenda designed to reposition the state as Africa’s leading hub of sporting excellence, with a focus on grassroots development, sustainable athlete welfare, and long-term impact.
At a media briefing attended by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, the Director-General of LSSC, Lekan Fatodu, outlined the plan anchored on three key pillars: Sports Development Reforms, a Renewed Grassroots Framework, and a Roadmap to Athletes’ Revitalisation.
Fatodu explained that the reforms are not short-term fixes but strategic, inclusive, and sustainable measures that will set Lagos apart in sports administration across the continent.
“We are enhancing opportunities beyond producing champions. This roadmap ensures athletes not only succeed in competition but also secure their careers and livelihoods after retirement,” he said.
As part of the Athletes’ Revitalisation Roadmap, Lagos will:
• Introduce biometric data capture for proper profiling, facility access, and monitoring.
• Establish career sustainability programmes to support athletes beyond their active years.
• Appoint an Athletes’ Liaison Officer — preferably a former athlete — to serve as a direct bridge between athletes and the Commission.
On the grassroots front, the LSSC will work with stakeholders, schools, parents, and community clubs to expand access to facilities and strengthen participation across all divisions of the state.
Fatodu also confirmed the dissolution of the senior Team Lagos, announcing that a new team will soon be constituted with renewed discipline, energy, and competitive spirit. Aspiring athletes have been urged to register via the Commission’s official portal.
With Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment and strong collaboration with stakeholders, the reforms aim to inspire a new generation of champions, empower communities, and restore Lagos’ pride as the sporting capital of Africa.
