Lagos State has been plunged into mourning and confusion following the shocking deaths of four elected female officials, all occurring within just two months of their inauguration.
The tragic wave began with the passing of Councillor Oluwakemi Rufai of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, who died on August 13, 2025, only 17 days into her tenure. The state was struck again when Councillor Zainab Shotayo of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA died on August 18, 2025, just 22 days after being sworn in.
In September, the grief deepened. Vice Chairman Oluremi Ajose of Badagry West LCDA passed away on September 20, 2025, 55 days after assuming office. Barely 24 hours later, Councillor Basirat Mayabikan of Ward F, Somolu Local Government, also died on September 21, 2025, just 56 days into her administration.
The string of sudden deaths, all within such a short span, has sparked panic and concern across Lagos State’s political landscape. Stakeholders and residents alike have described the trend as unprecedented in the history of grassroots governance.
Calls are now mounting for investigations into the unsettling pattern, as the state grapples with the repeated loss of its newly elected representatives.
