Tinubu Arrives Lagos on Working Visit Ahead of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday arrived in Lagos for a working visit as the country prepares to mark its 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2025.

The President’s arrival in Lagos followed his attendance at the historic coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, in Ibadan, Oyo State, earlier in the day.

Focus of the Visit

While in Lagos, President Tinubu is expected to engage with federal and state government officials, inspect key infrastructure projects, and hold consultations with business leaders and traditional rulers. According to sources in the Presidency, the visit forms part of broader activities lined up ahead of Independence Day, where the government will highlight its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to national unity and economic reforms.

The President is also expected to review security arrangements, as Lagos will host several official events in connection with the anniversary celebrations.

Independence Anniversary Preparations

Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary is set to be marked with a national broadcast by the President, a military parade in Abuja, and cultural events across the six geopolitical zones. The Federal Government has promised a modest but symbolic celebration, reflecting both the challenges and aspirations of Africa’s largest democracy.

This year’s theme, according to insiders, will focus on “Resilience, Reform, and Renewal,” capturing the government’s push for economic diversification, renewed patriotism, and structural reforms in sectors such as energy, transportation, and security.

Significance of the Milestone

At 65, Nigeria stands at a critical juncture. Since gaining independence in 1960, the country has navigated decades of military rule, transitions to democracy, economic booms and downturns, and ongoing security challenges. The anniversary provides an opportunity for reflection on progress made in infrastructure development, digital innovation, youth empowerment, and regional leadership.

For President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, the event will also serve as a platform to consolidate support for his administration’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, the unification of the exchange rate, and policies aimed at attracting foreign investment.

Lagos as Symbol of Renewal

Choosing Lagos for the President’s working visit is symbolic. As Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre and his political stronghold, the city reflects the blend of tradition and modernity that the government hopes to project during the anniversary. It is expected that Tinubu will use the visit to reinforce Lagos’ role in driving national growth and regional integration.

Public Expectations

Ahead of October 1, many Nigerians are looking to the President’s address for reassurance on pressing issues such as rising cost of living, job creation, electricity supply, and insecurity. Civil society groups have also called for the Independence celebrations to go beyond pageantry and serve as a catalyst for renewed commitment to governance reforms.
