The mother of a 400-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) who recently drowned at a Lagos beach has described the incident as “highly suspicious,” calling for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.
The student, whose name has not yet been officially released, reportedly drowned during an outing with friends. Eyewitness accounts remain conflicting, with some suggesting strong waves pulled him under, while others hinted at lapses in safety measures at the beach.
Speaking in an emotional interview, the grieving mother rejected claims that the drowning was accidental, insisting that certain details surrounding the incident do not add up.
“My son was a good swimmer. The stories I’m hearing are inconsistent, and I believe there is more to his death than what we’ve been told,” she said.
The tragedy has sparked outrage among students and parents, many of whom are demanding that authorities hold the beach management accountable for inadequate safety and rescue facilities.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine whether negligence or foul play was involved.
The university community has been thrown into mourning, with colleagues of the deceased describing him as a promising young man whose life was cut short too soon.
This incident adds to growing concerns about safety lapses at Lagos beaches, where drowning cases are reported almost yearly due to poor enforcement of safety standards.
