Ogun Secondary School Students Beat Teachers, Destroy School properties Over Colleague’s Death

A violent protest broke out at Ilugun High School, Abeokuta, on Monday, September 29, 2025, as students reportedly assaulted their teachers and vandalised school facilities.

Viral videos circulating on social media show groups of students hurling stones at classroom windows until the glass panes shattered. They went further to pull out aluminium window frames, leaving classrooms extensively damaged. Another clip captured students dragging and physically assaulting a person alleged to be one of the school’s teachers.

According to reports, the unrest was triggered by the death of a student who allegedly drowned while attempting to escape arrest by operatives of the Ogun State Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun. Witnesses claimed the student was wandering outside school premises during class hours before he fled from the officers and leapt into a river, where he lost his life.

The violent backlash has sparked outrage across the state, with many social media users condemning the students’ behaviour and questioning the growing wave of indiscipline in schools.

Reacting to the incident, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Ogun State described the attack as “unfortunate” and a dangerous precedent.

In a statement, the PCRC Chairman, Samson Popoola, said:

“The actions of the students undermine the sanctity of education and constitute a grave act of indiscipline and disrespect for constituted authority.”

He praised the swift intervention of security agencies in restoring order to the school and called on the Ogun State Ministry of Education to work with stakeholders to address the underlying issues.

Popoola further recommended that government authorities intensify dialogue, counseling, and disciplinary measures to curb future occurrences of such unrest.
