JUST IN: WhatsApp Set to Replace Phone Numbers with Usernames in Major Privacy Update

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a major change that could redefine how users connect on the platform — replacing phone numbers with unique usernames.

According to multiple tech reports, the Meta-owned messaging app is testing a new feature that allows users to create and reserve personalized usernames, marking a potential shift away from the long-standing phone number system. The update is currently being tested in beta versions and aims to give users greater privacy and flexibility when chatting.

With the new feature, WhatsApp users will soon be able to chat without revealing their phone numbers, instead sharing a username — similar to platforms like Telegram and Instagram. Early screenshots show a new “Username” field in profile settings, with guidelines for acceptable characters and formats.

However, Meta has not yet confirmed a global rollout date. Experts say the feature may be introduced gradually, allowing users to choose whether to connect via username or phone number.

Analysts believe the change is part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to enhance privacy and reduce unsolicited contact, especially for business and cross-border communications.

While phone numbers will likely remain tied to account verification and recovery, the new username system could become a safer and more user-friendly way to find and message people on the world’s largest chat platform — with over two billion active users.
