The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on all tertiary institutions across the country to introduce compulsory drug testing for both newly admitted and graduating students as part of their clearance process.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NANS said the initiative is aimed at curbing the growing menace of drug abuse among undergraduates and promoting a healthier academic environment.
According to the association, mandatory testing will not only help identify students in need of rehabilitation but also serve as a deterrent against substance misuse on campuses.
NANS further urged the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to collaborate with relevant health agencies in enforcing the policy across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
The students’ body emphasized that the measure aligns with its ongoing campaign to rid Nigerian campuses of illicit drug consumption and promote academic excellence through discipline and sound mental health.
