BREAKING: National Assembly Panel Approves Creation of New State in South-East

In a landmark decision, the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitution Review has unanimously approved the creation of an additional state in Nigeria’s South-East geo-political zone.

The approval, reached during the committee’s plenary session in Abuja, marks a significant step toward addressing long-standing agitations for equity and balance among Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

When formally created, the new state will raise the number of states in the South-East to six — bringing it at par with the South-South, South-West, North-Central, and North-East zones, each of which currently has six states.

The committee’s decision will next be presented to the full National Assembly for consideration and eventual passage before being transmitted to state assemblies for ratification, as required by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Details on the proposed name and composition of the new state are expected to be unveiled in the coming days.
