Anthony Joshua’s driver has been formally charged in court following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of the heavyweight boxing champion.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, on multiple counts, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid driver’s licence.
The charges stem from a fatal crash involving a Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and members of his team along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The vehicle reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.
Anthony Joshua sustained injuries in the accident but was later discharged after receiving medical attention.
During the court proceedings, the magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties in like sum. However, the driver is expected to remain in custody until the bail conditions are fully met.
The case has been adjourned to a later date in January for further hearing.
The incident has continued to generate widespread reactions across Nigeria and the international boxing community, with many expressing condolences to the families of the deceased and calling for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations.
