Super Falcons Remain Africa’s Top Team in Latest FIFA Rankings

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have maintained their status as the best women’s football team in Africa, following the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on June 12, 2025.

Despite a minimal gain of just 0.8 points, the Super Falcons (1623.29) remain Africa’s number one, holding the 36th spot globally. Their stronghold at the top, however, comes at a time when the competition is growing and becoming less predictable.

South Africa, widely considered Nigeria’s biggest rival on the continent, remain second in Africa but slipped slightly in the rankings. Banyana Banyana now sit 54th worldwide after losing 1.57 points, despite winning four games in a row. The dip has raised questions about how FIFA’s ranking formula weighs match results.

Cameroon surprised many by climbing two places globally, even with just one match played, a narrow loss to Nigeria. Meanwhile, Morocco, once the pride of African women’s football at the 2023 World Cup dropped eight points and now sit 60th in the world.

Zambia, another team with growing promise, also took a hit. The Copper Queens dropped to 65th after a string of poor results. Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire remained stagnant at 66th and 72nd.

Further down the list, Mali (78th), Senegal (81st), and Algeria (82nd) didn’t record any changes in points, indicating a plateau that could hurt their future competitiveness.

Globally, the United States held on to first place, but Brazil’s win over the Americans has seen them rise to fourth. Spain and Germany continue to pressure the top spot.

Egypt stood out as Africa’s biggest mover in this ranking window, jumping seven places to 93rd, the clearest indication that the game is growing across more corners of the continent.

With the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations just around the corner, all eyes are now on August 7, the date of the next ranking release, which could reshape the order depending on who rises to the occasion.
