The Lagos State Government has urged residents—especially those in low-lying and flood-prone areas—to stay alert as ongoing heavy rainfall may lead to flash floods across the state.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, cited weather forecasts predicting thunderstorms and widespread rainfall in the coming days. He noted that satellite imagery shows many areas may experience intense rain and strong flood currents, particularly regions near rivers and lagoons.
Wahab advised residents to avoid going out during heavy downpours unless absolutely necessary, and called on parents to closely supervise children on mid-term break to prevent unsafe play in the rain or floodwaters.
Motorists and pedestrians were also cautioned against navigating flooded roads, as vehicles can be submerged and lives endangered. He stressed the importance of not dumping waste into drains, which worsens flooding.
While drainage systems are maintained regularly, Wahab said extra caution is needed during this period to stay safe and reduce flood risks.
