Akran of Badagry, His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, Passes Away

His Royal Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I (OFR, LL.D., DLitt, JP), the Akran of Badagry Kingdom, has died, marking the end of a long and impactful reign over one of Lagos State’s most historic traditional institutions.

The revered monarch, who served as the paramount ruler of Badagry and a senior member of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, passed away and his death was announced today. His leadership spanned decades and made him a central figure in preserving the cultural heritage and unity of Badagry and its people.

A Storied Reign and Distinguished Service

De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I was widely respected across Lagos and beyond as a voice of tradition and stability. As Akran, he led the ancient coastal town of Badagry—an important historic centre that played a significant role in Nigeria’s pre-colonial and colonial history.

His Majesty was known not just for his royal duties, but also for his intellectual and civic contributions, holding honorary degrees and national honours, and serving as a bridge between modern governance and traditional leadership. He was also deeply involved in community development and cultural promotion throughout his reign.

His passing marks a significant moment in the history of Badagry and Lagos traditional leadership.
