Nigeria wrapped up their campaign at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo with Tobi Amusan once again proving her mettle as the country’s most dependable global performer, clinching silver in the women’s 100m hurdles to secure Nigeria’s only medal.
Amusan’s podium finish not only underscored her consistency on the world stage but also extended her reputation as one of the sport’s leading hurdlers.
The championships also produced a historic moment for Ezekiel Nathaniel, who broke his own national record in the men’s 400m hurdles final. The 22-year-old clocked 47.11 seconds to finish fourth, narrowly missing out on a medal but setting a new Nigerian benchmark for the sixth time in 2025.
The thrilling race was won by American Rai Benjamin in 46.52 seconds, adding the world crown to his Olympic title. Brazil’s Alison dos Santos took silver in 46.84, while Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba edged Nathaniel for bronze in 47.06.
Nigeria ended the championships with one silver medal, highlighting both the promise and challenges of the nation’s athletics program on the global stage.
