Bill Maher Criticizes Global Silence on Nigeria’s Christian Killings

American talk show host Bill Maher has criticized what he described as the international media’s indifference to the mass killings of Christians in Nigeria.

Speaking during the September 27, 2025, episode of his HBO show Real Time, Maher cited grim statistics from human rights reports: more than 100,000 Christians killed since 2009, the destruction of at least 18,000 churches, and 7,000 deaths recorded in just the first 220 days of 2025.

Maher pointed to ongoing violence in states like Benue and Borno, where militant groups such as Boko Haram and allied factions continue to target Christian communities.

The remarks drew applause from the studio audience and immediate political reaction, with U.S. Congresswoman Nancy Mace praising his stance. On social media, reactions were divided—some commended Maher for spotlighting a crisis often overlooked by Western media, while others argued that the broader conflict in Nigeria also involves issues of banditry, ethnic clashes, and resource disputes.

The monologue has reignited debates about how religious persecution in Africa is framed globally, and whether enough international pressure is being applied to curb the violence.
