BREAKING NEWS: Lagos State Government to Launch OMI EKO Project — Introduces 78 New High-Capacity Electric Ferries

Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government is set to officially launch the OMI EKO Project tomorrow, October 17, 2025, in a landmark move to revolutionize water transportation across the state.

Under the initiative, the government will unveil a new fleet of 78 high-capacity electric ferries, each with passenger capacities ranging between 50 and 200 seats. The OMI EKO Project aims to enhance connectivity, ease traffic congestion on Lagos roads, and promote cleaner, sustainable urban mobility through the use of renewable energy-powered marine transport.

Officials say the project is part of the state’s broader multi-modal transport strategy, integrating road, rail, and water routes under the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan. The electric ferries are also expected to drastically reduce carbon emissions and operational costs while boosting economic activity along the waterways.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to preside over the official launch ceremony.
