Buratai hails Tinubu’s economic policies at Amaechi’s birthday lecture

The former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, has commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for implementing bold measures to address Nigeria’s economic challenges.

He described the government’s approach as “a necessary departure” from the reform strategies employed by previous administrations in attempts to revive the economy.

Buratai made these remarks during a lecture in Abuja held to celebrate the 60th birthday of Nigerian politician and former minister, Rotimi Amaechi.

He also praised Amaechi, his longtime friend, for his consistent engagement in national affairs and his influential role in shaping Nigeria’s future.Speaking on economic reforms, Buratai reflected on how past governments handled the economy, citing the Structural Adjustment Programmes under Ibrahim Babangida and fuel subsidy policies during the administrations of Presidents Shagari, Obasanjo, Jonathan, and Buhari. He argued that these policies exacerbated poverty for many Nigerians.

In contrast, he lauded Tinubu’s government for implementing strong and far-reaching reforms aimed at resolving longstanding socio-economic issues.“These radical measures represent a decisive shift from the prolonged hardship of the past.

“They demonstrate a willingness to confront our problems directly, even if the consequences are immediate and significant,” he said.

Buratai acknowledged that some perceive the government’s policies as harsh, particularly in relation to poverty and security challenges.

Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that conditions will improve during the second half of Tinubu’s tenure.

He concluded his speech by calling for unity and resilience among Nigerians, urging everyone to support the government’s efforts to foster national growth and security.
