Dangote Refinery to Suspend Petrol Sales in Naira from September 28

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that it will halt the sale of petrol in the Nigerian currency starting tomorrow, Sunday, September 28, 2025.

In a notice issued to its customers, the refinery disclosed that it has exhausted the crude oil allocations priced in naira, making it impossible to continue transactions in the local currency.

According to the refinery’s Group Commercial Operations, “We cannot sustain PMS sales in naira going forward.”

The memo further directed customers currently engaged in naira-based transactions to formally request refunds. It added that the refinery would provide more information once the situation stabilises and sales in naira are able to resume.

The development marks another major shift in the downstream oil sector, as the refinery, which had earlier introduced naira-denominated transactions to ease access for marketers, is now fully reverting to foreign currency sales.

Industry experts suggest the move could place additional pressure on petroleum marketers and potentially affect pump prices across the country, depending on how quickly the crude allocation and payment structure are renegotiated.

The Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest single-train refining facility, commenced operations earlier this year and has since been a critical supplier of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to the Nigerian market.
