A Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has ordered a DNA test on Liam Aloba, the son of the late Afrobeats singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga issued the directive on Tuesday, ruling on an application filed by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, who is seeking to confirm his grandson’s paternity.
The court mandated that two separate DNA tests be conducted in recognised and accredited medical facilities, one within Nigeria and one abroad, to ensure a conclusive result. The ruling further stipulates that both parties or their representatives must be present during the collection of samples to ensure transparency.
In his application, filed by his counsel Wahab Shittu (SAN), Joseph Aloba also requested that the Military Hospital, Yaba, which holds the singer’s remains, release tissue or hair samples from Mohbad’s body for the test. The sole respondent in the case is Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, Mohbad’s widow and Liam’s mother. The paternity of Liam has been a subject of controversy and public speculation since Mohbad’s death in September 2023. This court order marks a major development in the ongoing family and legal disputes surrounding the tragic death of the 27-year-old singer. The case has been adjourned until November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.
