In a groundbreaking push to deepen democratic inclusivity, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) plans to extend voting rights to eligible prison inmates—particularly over 50,000 individuals currently awaiting trial—by the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has revealed that a joint technical committee with the Nigerian Correctional Service is already mapping out logistics for registration, voter education, and secure polling inside correctional centres. However, clear enabling provisions from the National Assembly are needed to clarify eligibility—especially for inmates on death row, life sentences, or convicted of treason.
Nigeria currently has over 81,000 inmates, with about two-thirds awaiting trial. If enacted, this reform could redefine national debates on human rights, electoral reform, and democratic inclusion.
