Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning the city as Africa’s hub of resilience, opportunity, and enterprise as it prepares to host the historic E1 Lagos Grand Prix from October 3 to 5 on Victoria Island.
Speaking at the E1 Lagos GP Immersion Session held at the LASWA Boat Jetty, Ikoyi, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described Lagos as a city that constantly reinvents itself. He said the upcoming water-based sporting event will demonstrate not just speed and excitement but also precision, sustainability, and innovation.
“This is more than putting race boats on the water. Everything about it requires science, careful planning, and accuracy,” Omotoso said. “It is about sustainability, creativity, and responsibility. Lagos is indeed the city of now and the city of the future.”
The Commissioner also urged residents to protect the environment, stressing that Lagos’ lagoons must remain clean as the city welcomes international visitors.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Sam Egube, noted that the global spotlight on Lagos underscores its growing reputation as a centre for technology, culture, and enterprise. “Beyond the competition, the city is positioning itself as a top destination for innovation and cultural diplomacy,” he said.
General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, assured participants of smooth operations, highlighting that the Navy, Marine Police, and other security agencies will secure the waterways. He added that “shakedown sessions” will be held ahead of the main event to allow competitors to test their boats.
Corporate partners, including First Bank of Nigeria and Tolaram Group, pledged support, describing the event as a historic first for Africa. Seven races are scheduled during the three-day championship, with points awarded to the top three finishers—25 for first, 15 for second, and 10 for third.
To ensure wide access, Lagosians will be able to follow the action live at viewing centres across the city, including the Boat Club Opening Point of Contact, Wing Jetty, Mikano Building, and LASWA headquarters.
Officials said the E1 Lagos GP goes beyond competition, reflecting Lagos’ enduring spirit of resilience and its ambition to stand tall on the global stage.
