National Council of State Approves Professor Amupitan as INEC Chairman Nominee

The National Council of State has unanimously endorsed the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His nomination was presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the Council’s meeting on Thursday at the State House, Abuja.

Professor Amupitan, a distinguished academic and Senior Advocate of Nigeria from the North-Central geo-political zone, is set to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended in October 2025 after serving since 2015.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State welcomed the decision, saying the nominee has “an impeccable record of service and character”.
