Somolu Chairman Ashimi Marks World Clean-Up Day, Calls for Action on SDGs 3 & 6

The Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, led residents, youth volunteers, and community stakeholders in a major environmental exercise to commemorate this year’s World Clean-Up Day, themed “Textile and Fashion Waste.”

The event, which also had in attendance the Vice Chairman, Hon. Taiwo Ojomu, underscored Somolu’s commitment to tackling environmental hazards and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 6—good health and well-being, and clean water and sanitation.

Hon. Ashimi urged residents, entrepreneurs, and business owners to adopt regular sanitation practices and embrace responsible consumption to curb the growing waste crisis associated with the fast-fashion industry.

The clean-up activities, which kicked off at Adebiyi/Aduroshakin Street (Ward B – Bashua West), extended through Craige/Dailey (Ward D – Orile Somolu) and Alonge Street (Ward G – Igbari-Akoka). The Council team was joined by the Chief of Staff, Prince Sodiq Adeeso, aides, and the Coordinator of the NextGen Sustainability Network, Comrade Olaniyi Kushimo. The exercise concluded at the residence of the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Tunde James Oyeyiola.

Commending the large turnout, Ashimi praised the contributions of party faithfuls, CDA members, NGOs, market leaders, youth groups, and other volunteers who participated in the exercise. He described their efforts as a demonstration of civic responsibility and a model for sustainable community development.

Later in the day, the Chairman hosted Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Hon. Tobi Oladepo; Somolu II Lagos Parliament Member, Hon. Suliyah Yetunde Oguns; and the Commander-in-Chief of CADETi Lagos, Amb. Opeoluwa Sobowale, at the Banquet Hall of the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Administrative Building.
