The Minister of Finance, Wale Edun Emerges as New President of Nigerian Boxing Federation

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has been elected as the new President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF). His emergence follows a keenly contested election held in Abuja, which drew representatives from across the country’s boxing associations, coaches, and other key stakeholders in the sport.

Edun’s appointment is being hailed as a strategic move aimed at breathing new life into Nigerian boxing, which has struggled in recent years due to poor funding, lack of infrastructure, and inadequate development programs. As a respected technocrat and financial strategist, his leadership is expected to attract fresh investments, sponsorships, and institutional reforms that could reposition the sport for greater success both locally and internationally.

Speaking after his emergence, Edun pledged to restore Nigeria’s lost glory in boxing and create opportunities for young talents to thrive. “Boxing has a proud history in Nigeria, and it deserves to reclaim its rightful place among the leading sports in Africa and beyond. My goal is to mobilize resources, strengthen governance within the federation, and build sustainable programs that will develop champions from the grassroots,” he said.

Officials from the Ministry of Sports Development commended the outcome of the election, describing Edun’s leadership as a positive step toward bridging the gap between sports administration and corporate governance.

With his vast experience in finance and economic planning, stakeholders are optimistic that Wale Edun will bring innovation, accountability, and renewed vigor to the Nigerian Boxing Federation — setting the stage for a new era of growth and international recognition for Nigerian boxers.
